How to send Substack to your Kindle for free
If you read on a Kindle, your Substack inbox is in the wrong place. Here are three ways to get those posts onto your device without paying for anything — fastest first.
Option 1 — Forward to your Send-to-Kindle email (5 minutes)
Every Kindle has its own email address. Send a document or a forwarded email to it and Amazon delivers it to your library.
- Find your Send-to-Kindle address: on Amazon, go to Account → Manage Your
Content and Devices → Preferences → Personal Document Settings. Your address
looks like
[email protected]. - In the same screen, add the email you'll send from to the Approved Personal Document Email List. Amazon rejects anything from an unapproved sender.
- In your email client, open the Substack post that landed in your inbox and forward it
to your
@kindle.comaddress. Plain newsletters arrive looking clean; image-heavy ones can render roughly.
This is free and works today. The catch: you do it one post at a time, by hand, every time a newsletter arrives.
Option 2 — Read in the Substack app, then export
The Substack app has a "Read in app" mode but no native Kindle export. The free workaround is to use your browser's Print → Save as PDF on the post's web page, then email that PDF to your Send-to-Kindle address (PDFs are accepted, though they don't reflow as nicely as text). Fine for the occasional long read you want to keep; tedious as a routine.
Option 3 — Get one weekly brief sent to your Kindle instead
Forwarding works, but if you follow more than two or three Substacks it turns into a chore, and you still end up shipping posts you won't read. The alternative is to stop forwarding individual posts and instead receive one weekly brief of all your newsletters, ranked, delivered straight to your Kindle.
Here's the difference. Forwarding moves the firehose to a new device. A brief decides what's worth your time first — the top picks for the week, each with a one-line reason, then everything else below it. You read the three that matter and skip the rest with a clear conscience, all on the e-ink screen you actually prefer.
The free tier covers up to 10 newsletters into one destination (Kindle, Readwise Reader, or Matter), one brief a week. No card, no app to install.
Which option should you use?
- One or two Substacks, occasional reader: the Send-to-Kindle forward (Option 1) is all you need.
- Five-plus newsletters and a growing "unread" pile: the weekly brief saves you the forwarding and the guilt.
If you use Readwise Reader instead of a Kindle, here's how to forward newsletters into Readwise Reader. Drowning in subscriptions generally? See how to manage too many newsletter subscriptions.
