Readwise Reader vs Matter for newsletters: how to choose

Both apps solve the same first problem — newsletters don't belong in your inbox — and both solve it well. The real differences are how issues get in, what reading feels like once they're there, and what you pay. Here's the honest comparison, plus the problem neither app fixes.

How newsletters get in

Readwise Reader gives you a personal address under Settings → Email (it looks like yourname@readwise.io, with a separate address for auto-forwarded mail). Sign up to newsletters with it, or auto-forward from Gmail, and issues appear in your Reader Feed — a triage stream kept apart from your saved Library.

Matter works the same way with a different address: tap your profile in the app for your handle, and your address is your_handle@subs.getmatter.com. Matter adds a shortcut Reader doesn't have: on iOS it can connect to your Gmail account and fetch the newsletters already arriving there, no filters needed.

Call intake a draw — with a slight edge to Matter if you want the no-setup Gmail connection, and to Reader if you live on the desktop web.

What reading feels like

  • Matter is the design-first pick: a polished, iOS-and-iPad-native reading experience with strong text-to-speech. If reading is a wind-down activity and you're on Apple hardware, Matter feels best.
  • Reader is the power-user pick: a full web app alongside mobile, keyboard-driven triage, and highlights that flow into the wider Readwise system for spaced review and export to your notes app. If newsletters feed your work, Reader does more with them.

Pricing

As of mid-2026: Reader isn't sold alone — it's part of the full Readwise subscription at $9.99/month billed annually ($12.99 month-to-month), with a 30-day free trial and no permanent free plan. Matter has a free tier for basic read-later use, with premium features around $60/year. Check both pricing pages before deciding; these move.

The bottom line

  • Pick Matter if you're on iPhone/iPad, want the nicest reading screen, and like a free way in.
  • Pick Reader if you work across desktop and mobile, highlight heavily, or already use Readwise.

The problem neither app fixes

Whichever you choose, week two looks the same: 20–40 unread issues in a feed, and you scanning titles trying to guess which ones deserved your evening. Moving the firehose to a better app doesn't shrink the firehose.

That's the layer we add. One weekly brief reads all your newsletters, ranks them by what's worth your time this week — each pick with a one-line reason, the rest listed below — and lands as a single document in Reader or Matter, whichever you picked. The free tier covers up to 10 newsletters into one destination, one brief a week.
